Snowmageddenon ... what a giant cluster!

Roughly 72 hours ago, the city of Atlanta was hit by 2 - 3 inches of snow / ice and way below freezing temperatures.  As expected (and any native knows, the same thing that happened in '82, '95 and '11) the ice came and created pure gridlock.

Chaos ensued in the commuter city and millions were left on highways and side roads.  I've heard hundreds of stories about horrid commutes, people sleeping in their cares / stores / restaurant bathrooms, etc. and I have to say that I got off easy with my 90 minute commute to go 3 miles.

I was unlucky and due to some work commitments, I wasn't able to leave around noon with everyone else and sat in the office until 5 watching the gridlock from the warmth of our 31st floor office in midtown.  I considered staying in a hotel or even walking home, but there were no hotel rooms and I just didn't feel walking was going to be the best path across ice.

It felt like we were watching a bad movie until we realized that at some point, we were going to have to force our way home through the carnage. And the sad part is we were laughing about how absurd everything was b/c of a few inches of snow and the lack of preparation by the city / state governments.

After hemming and hawwing a bit, I headed out to my trusty SUV and attempted the journey home. The drive was slow but not too treacherous when driving in low gears. At one point, some ass clown decided to drive fast and pass me ... and he ended up hitting a concrete mail box head on.  I noticed that they were ok and then kept on because karma had sealed their fate.

When I made it home, I didn't feel like it was much until I turned on the news to hear all the chaos ... and then the politicians whine on ... and on ... and on ... and on.

Couple of observations:
  • All of the politicians are embarrassing. Mayor Kasim Reed is blaming everyone else but he's guilty as well. There was nothing on the roads prior to the storm (I drove on them that morning and there was nothing). And Kasim's national media push to blame someone else is just brutal ... you will get your White House job under Hilary, just hide in the shadows until Obama / Hilary hook you up.
  • The governor didn't act and is blaming meteorologists ... yeah, super doplar can only do so much. At some point, you have to just say, its going to snow ... don't goto work.
  • The teachers, volunteers, random strangers are the big winners in the storm. So many amazing stories of people helping people. For instance, my friend Frank spent the day pulling people out of ice and driving people home ... and he thinks nothing of it.
  • Common sense didn't prevail ... there are too many people and the transportation system is a joke on a perfect weather day.  You throw ice into the mix, and you have pure chaos.
  • If a real disaster were to occur, we aren't going to make it. Nothing about what's happened in the last 72 hours provides any confidence in local or state government.  We already have zero confidence in the federal government so it's pretty much going to be every man for themselves.
  • For future storms, be prepared ... be like Jed and wear boots to work and pack a blanket and some water in your car.  Better yet, throw in an overnight bag with some liquor and maybe a few gallons of gas ... just in case.  And if you are feeling really squirly, throw in some weapons and ammo ... never know when you are going to need them.

As stormjam worsened, Reed bypassed gridlock for TV spot

As stormjam worsened, Reed bypassed gridlock for TV spot

Great read about our wonderful mayor. He's been slammed in the media all week and has been very defensive.  Hard for any of us to support him when you hear that he used much needed resources (and the emergency lane) to get to a weather channel interview.

Good to see one of our "great" and "future" leaders properly using resources so he can get some more facetime on TV.

That's going to leave a mark ...

I was watching this live and actually stopped what I was doing when the mascot lit this poor kid up. It was like watching Chris Miller circa mid-90's for the Falcons.

I live this on a daily basis

The beauty of my job is that I spend at least 5 - 6 hours a day on a conference call. And I say beauty with complete sarcasm because conference calls are the devil. They are painful and must rate up as one of the least favorite ways to communicate. Check out the video below ... a very entertaining portrayal of a conference call.

And the apocalypse is right around the corner ...

Earlier this week, Arcade Fire covered Devil Inside by INXS.  First off, why ... second off, I think Michael Hutchinson just rolled over in his grave because no one should cover INXS. Yeah, that's right, Jed's an INSX fan. When I was a pre-teen, my sister would drive me around and make me listen to INSX over and over again. So much so, that all of my mixed tapes from the early 90s all have GNR, Motley Crue, Metallica and INXS.  Yeah ... I'll go ahead and throw that down on the list of things to share with the therapist.

A must see ...

It's rare that I would ever rate a movie an A+, but Lone Survivor wins that accolade.  Go see the movie ... its amazing. One of the few movies that lives up to the book by Marcus Luttrel.  A deeply sad, proud and patriotic movie that further instills my gratitude and pride in our military / special forces.

Sadly, this movie won't win awards (shame on Hollywood) but it should win all of them. Peter Berg, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, Taylor Kitsch and Eric Bana did a phenomenal job. It definitely is the most outstanding war movie since Saving Private Ryan.

So what are you waiting for ... go see it ... now! And NEVER QUIT!

Grumpy gets a new ticker

For the last couple of month, Grumpy has been having a few heart issues.  Now, I won't go into detail because being Grumpy, he doesn't necessarily agree with anyone on the diagnosis, etc.  Anywhoo, yesterday morning, he received a pacemaker to keep his ticker going.

Highlight of Grumpy's hospital visit was my night staying with him. Every time I've been in the hospital, the room has some sort of reclining chair that acts as a mattress.  Well, the North Georgia Medical Center had a chair but I wouldn't call it a mattress chair. Let's just say it had been used a few times and the reclining feature wasn't exactly top notch.  The other good news, a nurse came into the room every hour to check in on him and felt the need to wake me up too.  I'd say it was a great bonding experience, but Grumpy was on drugs and I was just sitting in said chair.

Regardless, we both survived and lived to tell about it.  Grumpy did great in the hospital and I"m excited to see him back on the running trail and just generally being Grumpy.  Not sure what we would do without his daily grumpified POV on things.

Congrats on the new ticker, Grumpy! We are all proud of ya!

This is amazing

The gym + New Years Resolutions

Each January / February, I love seeing new faces at the gym because of New Years resolutions. It doesn't take too long for them to trail off and not return, but for a few months, its great people watching.

You see lots of people who have the heart to work out, but either lack the motivation or just don't know what they are doing.  Video below does a great job of exploring some of the awesome stereotypes in the gym except that they left out women.

How can you forget about the three girlfriends that put on make up / dress up to hit the treadmill and gossip loudly for 20 minutes? The girl who wants to stretch and talk on her mobile loudly? Or the chic who wants to start lifting weights with her boyfriend (who isn't paying any attention to her) and a few minutes later she's lying on the ground with something torn or a broken bone.

I can only imagine what its like at CrossFit ... do they go ahead and have an EMT on site for new injuries?

The latest ...

It's cold, super cold, really cold ... so cold I actually grabbed a blanket while I was watching a movie tonight.  Let's just say I'm never cold because Retired Sorority Girl actually took a picture of me with the blanket and posted it on Facebook.

After a long hiatus, I'm venturing back into the World of blogging. I'm well aware of both of you that read the blog so just consider this your own daily source of entertaining content and stupid stories.

While I'm a week late, I thought I would give some predictions for 2014.  I'd do a recap of '13, but we all know I got married, went on a few cruises and that pretty much sums up the year.

  • The Red Sox have a better chance than the Braves winning a World Series. The Cubs have almost no chance and the Yankees are spending the GDP of South America to win another one.
  • Unless I have a massive inheritance or lottery win pending, I seriously doubt we will buy a house this year.
  • I'm hoping to get to Europe but I'm not sure its going to happen - we have an anniversary and a 70th birthday vacation to plan for this year which may keep me from going to visit.
  • The Captain American movie will be amazing ... it has to be.
  • The ATF will finally contact me and I'll be able to get that SBR after all.
  • Retired Sorority Girl and I are going to get in amazing shape ... well, our definition of incredible shape.
So happy reading and hope you both have a wonderful New Year.  Here's to hoping for a lot to write about.

Lone Survivor

It's rare that I get excited about a "real" movie ... in other words a movie that is based on a true story.  I do think that the studios are over-hyping the moving but I'm excited to see Lone Survivor.  I've read both of Marcus Luttrel's books as well as a few other transcripts about Operation Redwing.

If you haven't read the book, it's a must.  A truly fascinating and sad depiction of a SEAL team and the Special Forces that died in combat during Operation Redwing. It's a sad story, but a fascinating story about teams and brotherhood.  Plus, Peter Berg directed the movie and he's a home run waiting to happen.

In other news, we saw Anchorman 2 and while I wouldn't get it an F, I would probably give it a D+ at best. No one expected it to be amazing, but it really fails across the board.  You are better off watching all 70 Dodge commercials back-to-back ... they are much funnier.

Bye bye BCS

Everyone has an opinion on the BCS and while I've enjoyed many of the games, I'm excited for the new playoff format.  Granted, I would prefer a division I-AA (FCS) approach, but whatever, I'll take the playoff.

Last nights game was something ... so much that I fell asleep. The highlight of the night was watching all of ESPN's BCS Megacast coverage. Normally, I hate Brent Musberger, but the new feature of multiple channels was ... amazing.  Personally, I loved the titletalk channel where I got to see Lou Holtz eat some nachos, Franklin ramble, David Pollock smart off with everyone and Tebow / Manziel create a bromance that may live on forever. Oh and I may be the only person in the country, but I would love to see Manziel go back to A&M for another year.  He's so much fun to watch on the college level that I'm selfish and want to see him come back for another year.

So good bye BCS ... the SEC will miss you.

Motivation

Today is certainly one of those days where I"m lacking the motivation to carry through even the most simple task.  I just noticed that I have a blog post, 18 emails, 2 FB posts, a bank account transfer and an Amazon cart all open and waiting on me to approve, send, accept or close.

I guess I could blame it on the cold weather? or ... I could install bring a friend to work day? I'm saying bring a friend (or someone to talk to) because I once had a couple of co-workers that sat next to me and I got to ramble too all day about generally anything and everything. Let's be honest, they were nice people that listened to me bull shit all day ... regardless, their departure has left a void that I'm trying to fill with forced (unsuccessful, mind you) conversations on others and iTunes.

Since no one else wants to listen to me ramble, I'm going to share an iTunes song of the day:  Calling Dr. Love by Kiss.

Yeah, its cold ... but we live in an indoor world

Friend of mine was complaining about how cold it is outside and I just couldn't stop laughing at her. Granted, it is 12 and will be 5 later today, but its not like we live in an outdoor, unheated tent. Each morning, we both walk to our cars in a parking deck; then get into a seat heated car and drive to another parking deck where we walk 30 yards into a heated elevator bank. I mean it sure is cold, but I was exposed to the cold for all of 4 minutes.  Now, if I used public transportation ... ok, let's be honest, I'll never use public transportation again so no need to even finish that sentence.

Anywhoo, saw this video on YouTube about milk, bread and it made me think of my dad growing up. Anytime there was going to be snow, we had a panic about getting enough bread, milk and eggs in case the movie Day After Tomorrow actually broke out. I do remember a week with no power in 1993 that was a bit tough, but Grumpy figured out a way to create an igloo in the backyard to ensure nothing in the fridge would spoil.

Good times ...

The Alabama Loss Stings ...

... but not as much as realizing that this woman is your Mom.  I'm not sure if she's the greatest mom ever, or really embarrasing. Either way, don't mess with the Tide. They will even send their mom's after you!

And I'm back ... it's 2014!

yeah, I know, I've been MIA but now I'm back ... and me and my ellipsis are here to stay!

Did you know that in the movie back to the future, the future was 2015? I think I'm going to go find Marty McFly ASAP ... oh and a Delorean!

Some Beatles to kick off 2014.  Happy New Year Kids ... time to make a difference this year. No clue what that means, yet ...
